International driving permit is now compulsory in Florida

A new law has been introduced in Florida, USA, as from 1st January 2013. It is now mandatory for all persons who hold a licence issued outside of the US to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) if driving in Florida.

This is classed as a serious offence and it is unlikely to be waived with a caution if caught driving without the permit.

International Driving Permits can be obtained in Great Britain from larger branches of the post office or postal versions are available from the AA or RAC. An IDP permit is valid for 12 months and the start date can be delayed for up to 3 months.
