Welcome to the homepage for Ian Allan Rail Tours and thank you for your visit.

Before anyone should ask, we thought we’d enlighten you as to what makes an Ian Allan Rail Tour so special … in one word, it’s ‘You’. Each time we take a group on a tour we don’t just talk about locomotives, we also listen. We listen to your ideas about the type of thing that would make an ideal rail tour. Then we incorporate your ideas into our future tours. It is no wonder the programme is growing year on year.

To help you choose the tour you’d like we’ve divided our tours into three distinct categories:

Steam and Heritage Narrow Gauge - our tour to Harz Mountains is a good example - aimed at the enthusiast, but these tours are guaranteed to convert the non enthusiasts amongst you.

Heritage Transport and Sightseeing - Mallorca is the perfect example. These tours include rail as the form of transport, but also allow time to sightsee and enjoy the destination’s culture. This is an ideal trip for the enthusiast and non-enthusiast alike.

Legendary rail journeys - This year we are championing the narrow gauge El Transcantábrico. Trips under these headings are those once in a lifetime experiences that you have identified as being a ‘must’. 2009 sees us off to Namibia to join the Desert Express.

Back to 2008 - it is an exciting year for steam with some ‘big 0’ anniversaries to add to its illustrious history:

> 40 years since the end of steam on British Rail;
> 60 years since Nationalisation of the railways; and
> 70 years since Mallard’s world speed record for a steam locomotive

This is an exciting time of year when many of our heritage and preserved railways have Gala weekends a plenty – something for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you aboard as we travel along the many miles of track.

Now for some housekeeping – our accommodation will be in superior 3-star hotels wherever possible and meal plans will be as stated in each itinerary. All prices are based on twin sharing rooms and single room supplements will be advised where applicable. There is no ‘typical hotel’ within our programme. You will notice that some of our European tours are priced from arrival at our destination. We have decided on this pricing, because the destination is popular and accessible from all regional airports in the UK therefore saving you the bother of travelling to London to join the group. Remember, we can, of course, assist you with your flights.

Jean Loveland Craig or one of our experienced Tour Managers, who are rail enthusiasts themselves, will escort all our tours.

So welcome aboard and join us as we evoke the grandeur and excitement of rail travel from days gone by …. and at the same time, experience some of the more modern methods of transport! For the latest information on our Rail Tours programme and booking conditions, please contact:-
