How can we help you?

I supervise a team of agents at IAT. The work here is demanding but rewarding, no two days are the same. We all like a challenge and get a real kick out of pulling a rabbit out of a hat to help a traveller with a seemingly impossible request. We enjoy getting to know our customers and find that very quickly we can think for them, anticipating How can we help you?their need before they've said, I believe this is what makes IAT different from other TMC's.

UK Border Agency Strike

We have been informed by the UK Border Agency that the PCS (Public & Commercial Services) Union Members have called a 48 hour strike which will affect UK Border Agency staff. Union members include air traffic controllers, customs, border, immigration etc.

This strike will commence from 7am on Monday 8 March until 7am on Wednesday 10 March.

The impact of the strike will be different at individual ports, airports and international rail terminals based on a number of factors including:

· the proportion of UK Border Agency staff at the port who are members of the PCS
· the number of staff who choose to strike on either or both days
· the number of volunteers who are able to work in overtime or who will deploy to support frontline operations

The UK Border Agency advises passengers to travel as normal but to expect some additional delay passing through border controls.

We would recommend passengers to allow sufficient time to complete departure formalities.

Cabin crew strike ballot

A message from CEO, Willie Walsh

“I wanted to update you on what we propose to do in the event that a strike does go ahead.

Unite, the union that represents our BA cabin crew, has not as yet announced any strike dates.

It must tell us by 15 March whether a strike will happen and it cannot go on strike without first giving us seven days notice of the first day.

In the meantime we continue to have talks with Unite and we want to resolve the issues between us.

I want to reassure you that a strike will not ground British Airways. We have had nearly 6,000 volunteers in total to support our flying programme, including nearly 1,000 who have trained as cabin crew and the number is growing.

We have been putting plans into place and although we cannot announce the precise schedule we will operate until we know for sure what Unite would do, I can tell you what our plans are.

We will operate all our flights from London City airport, including long-haul services to New York.

We will operate all our long-haul schedule at London Gatwick, and about half of our short-haul schedule.

At London Heathrow, we will operate a substantial proportion of our long-haul programme and a good number of short-haul flights too, assisted by chartered aircraft with crews from a number of UK and European-based airlines. We have at least 23 aircraft available to us over an extended period.

All BA CityFlyer, codeshare and franchise flights will continue to operate as normal.

We have also arranged to secure seats from other carriers, so thousands more of you can reach your chosen destinations.

At this stage our plans do not include crew at London Heathrow who may choose to work normally. More than 4,000 of all crew did not vote for strike action.

I would like to thank you for standing by us in recent weeks. Despite all the uncertainty Unite has created since it announced its ballot in January, passenger numbers for February were actually higher than a year ago – and our premium traffic rose for the first time in 18 months.

We want to help you as much as we possibly can.

If strike dates are announced:
You will be able to rebook, free of charge and subject to availability, onto other British Airways flights outside of the strike period for up to 355 days from the original date of travel.
Refunds will only be available if flights are actually cancelled or if the original booking conditions allow.

In the event that cancellations are made due to strike action. You will be able to:
· Rebook onto another British Airways flight to the same destination within 355 days of the original date of travel
· Rebook onto another British Airways flight to/from the nearest alternative airport (for example, if booked to/from Boston you could rebook to/from Philadelphia or New York)
· Cancel your booking and get a refund.
· All rebooking options will be subject to availability.

More detailed information about rebooking options, including specific dates covered by these guidelines will be made available if a strike is announced.

Normal Conditions of Carriage will apply for any flights that are cancelled outside of the strike period.

British Airways Executive Club members will continue to earn Tier Points and BA Miles for flights cancelled due to any strike action.”

ESTA News

If approved by the Senate, it is expected that President Obama will agree a fee of $10 to help fund a planned new body to promote tourism to the country.

The initiative is funded through a matching programme of up to $100 million in private sector contributions and a $10 fee on visitors to the US who do not pay $131 for a visa to enter the country.

The fee will be collected once every two years in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security's Electronic System for Travel Authorisation.

Eurostar travel update

Following the successful re-opening of the Belgian high-speed line, Eurostar services between the UK and Brussels resumed 1st March. A full Eurostar service will run from Tuesday 2 March.

Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) compulsory from 20th January 2010

From 20th January 2010 it will be mandatory for all passengers travelling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) 72 hours prior to departure. This online form will eventually replace the green visa waiver form (I94W) which is currently completed whilst en-route to the US.

Passengers should visit the website: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and fill in the required information. In most cases a response will be received within seconds determining whether travel to the US has been authorised. If the application is not authorised then a visa may be requested through the US Embassy. In some instances customers will need to wait up to 72 hours for authorisation.

ESTAs are in addition to the requirement for all passengers to submit APIS data.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions regarding ESTA available on their website: www.cbp.gov.

Important Information regarding India - revision

The Indian High Commission has advised that there is a new requirement when entering India, which is in connection to the Swine Flu outbreak.

The "Health Screening Card", which is below, must be completed as instructed and presented to immigration staff on arrival at India where mandatory checks for flu like symptoms will be made, which if detected, may result in any individual being quarantined or possibly hospitalised.

At present, this applies to all nationals travelling for all reasons, but we will update you further if this changes. It is also vital to add that anyone who has already obtained their Indian visa must also complete the health card.

ESTA - Regulations for entry to USA

From 12 January 2009 short term visitors on the visa waiver plan had to register their details online 72 hours prior to travel.

The tightening of restrictions means the citizens of 27 countries who currently enjoy the visa waiver scheme have to enter the same details onto a government website as those required on a I-94 card, currently handed in to Customs on arrival in the US.

The online registration will, however, be valid over a two year period and there will be some provisions for those travelling last minute.

Ian Allan Travel Ltd is accredited under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification

Pat O'Neill, Director of Operations, stated:

"We are delighted to be one of the first TMC's to be accredited under this scheme. During the review process, environmentally relevant issues were identified and evaluated. We included a review of the company's energy consumption and put in place waste management and recycling procedures across our trading divisions. This is actively supported by our entire management structure and employees. In order that all our staff are fully aware of the implications and requirements of ISO 14001, we have compiled a comprehensive manual which outlines procedures, best practice and our objectives for the future.

Our clients will continue to benefit from our investment in the CO2 emission reporting tools in place and our ability to refer them to various compensation solutions. We fervently believe that this accreditation and the constant review of procedures which facilitate this award will further enhance our ability to service and deliver our customers’ expectations."

Changes to rules on hand baggage

Please note that for the majority of passengers travelling from UK airports, where the rules have been relaxed, the allowance is one bag plus handbag or briefcase or laptop. Airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number, size and weight of items which may be taken into the aircraft cabin and travellers are recommended to check these. A list of airports where the one item restriction no longer applies can be found at www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity
