Increased security in Bangkok
03/09/2010
On 3 September 2010 authorities in Bangkok increased security at locations throughout the city in response to recent grenade attacks. Reports indicate that additional officers under the authority of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) have been deployed to over 400 key sites. CRES is the special government agency set up to enforce the current state of emergency for Bangkok imposed following violent anti-government protests in March-May 2010.
The CRES security force in Bangkok is comprised of Thai military soldiers, police officers and other law enforcement agents. Ten CRES special operations squads will also be on standby to respond to any security related incidents anywhere in the city. Thai authorities stated that the additional security measures have been set up in response to a recent wave of low-level bombings and grenade attacks that have occurred in Bangkok since the state of emergency was established. At least seven such low-intensity bombings using military-grade grenades have occurred in Bangkok since May 2010. The most recent bombing at a television station caused minor damage on 31 August.
