From January 2009 - New Regulations for entry to USA

From 12 January 2009 short term visitors on the visa waiver plan will have to register their details online 72 hours prior to travel.

The tightening of restrictions means the citizens of 27 countries who currently enjoy the visa waiver scheme will now have to enter the same details onto a government website as those required on a I-94 card, currently handed in to Customs on arrival in the US.

The online registration will, however, be valid over a two year period and there will be some provisions for those travelling last minute.

The new initiative will be rolled out this August but will be enforced to all countries from January 12 2009.

Changes to rules on hand baggage

Please note that for the majority of passengers travelling from UK airports, where the rules have been relaxed, the allowance is one bag plus handbag or briefcase or laptop. Airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number, size and weight of items which may be taken into the aircraft cabin and travellers are recommended to check these. A list of airports where the one item restriction no longer applies can be found at www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity
